    Stewart was born in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. He is the only child of English-born parents, and grew up mostly in Cornwall, England. As a child, Stewart was shy and introverted. He wanted to be an actor from a young age, but did not consider it realistic. He attended his local public school until the age of 16, and then began his studies at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. He did not initially intend on becoming an actor, but mostly because he was attracted to the idea of living in various locations and thus supposed that he would get to travel and see different places. He enrolled in a two year course in drama and was soon spotted by a casting director while attending a small theater school in London. Stewart immediately took off for London, where he enrolled in the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.

    Stewart graduated from his two-year course in June 1968. In 1972, Stewart made his acting debut with a small part in the film "The Fighting Lord Byron," followed by a role in the highly acclaimed "The Lord of the Rings" film trilogy that decade.
