He was an introverted child and found it hard to establish relationships with other children. “My shyness got the better of me in many situations,” he says. “I was never able to express myself fully. I had to learn over time to express myself with words.”
While his friends were out playing, Erik would sit at home by himself, thinking. “I was always looking for ways to improve myself. I wanted to be someone who could make a difference.”
In school, Erik was a model student – he did well in English and maths – but he says he didn’t feel as if he fitted in with his peers.
Erik is a Northman warlord, brother of Sigefrid. More considered and contemplative than his violent brother, Erik and Uhtred form a precarious understanding and mutual respect. Kind and loyal, Erik’s compassion and faithfulness leads him into deep waters. He takes a liking to Æthelflaed when she is taken hostage and they plan to run away together. However, before they can leave he is killed by his brother Sigefrid to protect Æthelflaed.
