In the end they both realize that they can be happy without being with someone else, and that they can keep the memories of their time together alive by spending time together like they did in the beginning of the movie.

The best film I've seen in recent memory is called "Kids" by Harmony Korine. It's a film that portrays life on the streets of New York City during the late 80's and early 90's. The film is based on Korine's own experiences as a child growing up in New York.
