"Born in the 80s, Lexa is the first character on the show to be transgender," executive producer Jason Rothenberg wrote in a Tumblr post. "Not that she's necessarily had a choice about it — the writers just wanted to tell a story about a person who was born female and who ends up being raised as a boy."
"For Lexa, it's not a gender thing," Rothenberg told the Los Angeles Times. "She doesn't actually think of herself as a girl. She sees herself as a warrior, and she's a guy — and we saw her as a guy."
Lexa is played by actress Carmen Moore, who is also trans.
