"Not that she's necessarily had a choice about it — the writers just wanted to tell a story about a person who was born female and who ends up being raised as a boy."
"For Lexa, it's not a gender thing," Rothenberg told the Los Angeles Times. "She doesn't actually think of herself as a girl. She sees herself as a warrior, and she's a guy — and we saw her as a guy."
Lexa is played by actress Carmen Moore, who is also trans.
The show is currently airing its third season on The CW.
The previous two seasons of the series have been met with equally positive reviews from critics. The show has been nominated for five GLAAD Media Awards, winning in the category of Outstanding Drama Series in 2014 and 2015.
