I have seen it used in the same way to describe both male and female characters, but since it is being used in relation to the MBTI personality type system, I'm going to use it here for males.
So given these personality types, how does this affect the story?
Well, the ISTJ personality type is the parent of the ISFJ personality type, so they are very protective. They are very concerned with how others view them and they will go to great lengths to make sure that people like them. Since they spend a lot of time in their own head, they aren't in touch with the outside world and sometimes in their own head they feel like people in the outside world don't like them and don't like what they do. This is part of the insecurity that the ISFJ personality type deals with. The ISFJ also has a lot of respect for authority figures, and when confronted with authority figures, will often defer to them out of respect. The ISFJ also tends to be overly perceptive and they tend to pick up on things that other people may not pick up on.
