"I was never a very organized person. I wasn't a morning person. I was always late for things. I had a hard time with deadlines. I had a hard time with the concept of responsibility," she said.
Her mother, a single parent, was a school teacher and a bookkeeper. She had a limited amount of time to devote to Denise because she was raising a son as well as a daughter.
"We were always fighting over me, fighting over who was going to do what. I wanted to do everything. I had a hard time with doing things as an adult because it keeps you from doing other things," Denise said.
In some ways, her mother's situation was more difficult than Denise's, because her mother had to balance raising two children and working two jobs. She would also take Denise and her brother to the park and read to them and build forts and play games and stuff like that. And Denise loved all of it.
