Matthews was the first player to come out in the sports world to be gay, in 1987, when he was in the NFL. He described the feeling of waiting for the phone to ring when he came out, saying it was like "living in abject terror."
After coming out, Matthews became more cautious about his sexuality in the media. "It's not worth it to me to put myself through that," he said in response to reporters asking him about his sexual orientation in 1991. "That's not worth it. That's not worth it to me. I'm just not going to do it."
Matthews went on to play for several more teams including the New York Giants, New York Jets, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After he retired from his NFL career, he went on to work for several companies, including the National Football League Players Association. He started working with the NFLPA in 1995 and worked with them until his death.
Matthews died of an apparent heart attack in 2016, at the age of 59.
