Leaving the characters behind, how about the personalities themselves? That's a more complicated question. Japanese individuals, especially those who work with Japanese individuals, have a tendency to talk about personality types as if they were real things. When I was first working with Japanese people I'd hear them say things like "I have a Ni personality type!" or "I have a Se personality type!" or "I have a Ti personality type!" as if those were actual personality types.
In a way they are. They're just not very useful. Talking about personality types is a good idea for a quick, informal overview of a person's personality, but that's about it. The problem is that personality type is not a good way to understand a person. Personality types are the result of a complex interaction between many different factors, and the interaction depends on the context (the situation) and on the person (the subject). If two people with very similar personality types are put in very different situations they will react quite differently.
