After the war, he returned to England to attend Cambridge University, where he earned his Ph.D. in physics.
Von Buckingham died on February 20, 1997, at the age of 97. He was married to his wife, Hannelore, for over ninety years. She passed away in June of 2003; she was 96. A few days before she passed away, she wrote this note to her husband: “Dear Rolly: I’ll be with you very soon. Remember to take your pills! Love you! Hannelore.”
