I’ve worked with Marisol since July of 2017. She was a group leader at her previous school. She is a very engaging student, with a lot of questions and a lot of energy. When we first started working together, she was very anxious to do well in classes. She wanted to get A’s and B’s in order to make her dad proud.
Over the course of the first year of working together, I noticed that she was spending a lot of time in her room, and that she was not making friends. In one of our weekly check-ins, I asked her about this and she said that her teacher had told her that she should not talk about herself in class. When I asked why, she said that no one asked her questions about herself.
She also said that she did not want to make friends because she was worried that people would start talking about her.
Marisol needed someone to take the time to get to know her in order to understand why she was feeling this way, but she had already been told that it was not allowed to do so by her teachers.
