Erwin König (born December 12, 1923 in Munich – died February 27, 2009 in Munich) was a German field marshal and the last Commander-in-chief of the Bundeswehr, serving from 1994 to 1996. He was also a non-commissioned officer (NCO) and a lieutenant (German: Leutnant) of the Luftwaffe during World War II.
König was born on December 12, 1923 in Munich to Friedrich and Elisabeth König.
During August 1944, König was stationed at the airfield at Büchel near Bonn as a lieutenant of the Luftwaffe. He was part of the first unit of the Gebirgsjäger Battalion 700 who were designated as Panzergrenadier Battalion 700.
He was wounded during the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross.
