Aeneas (in ancient Greek: Αἰνείας, Aineías; in Latin: Aenēās, -ae) is a figure of Greek and Roman mythology, son of the mortal Anchises (cousin of the king of Troy Priam) and of Aphrodite / Venus, goddess of beauty. Prince of the Dardans, he participated in the Trojan war on the side of Priam and the Trojans, during which he distinguished himself very early in battle. A very talented warrior, he was a Trojan hero second only to Hector, but assumes a less important role within Homer's Iliad. Aeneas is the protagonist of Virgil's Aeneid, a poem in which the events following his escape from Troy are narrated, characterized by long wanderings and numerous losses caused by the wrath of Juno. The story ends with his landing on the shores of Lazio and with his marriage to Princess Lavinia, daughter of the local Latino king.

The figure of Aeneas, archetype of man obedient to the gods and humble in front of their will, has been taken up by numerous ancient authors, after Virgil and Homer.
