In Greek mythology, Polynices is one of the two king brothers of Thebes. The meaning of his name is "manifold strife". He and his brother Eteocles shared the throne, but after a quarrel, Eteocles gains the support of the Thebans and expels Polynices. In Aeschylus' tragedy Seven Against Thebes, Polynices gathers the support of the Argives and attacks Thebes. Although Eteocles's forces were victorious, both brothers end up dying.
Polynices' corpse doesn't get buried, which sparks the events shown in Sophocles' "Antigone".
