The Myers-Briggs (MBTI) personality types are based on the theory of psychological personality developed by Swiss psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung, who first published his theories in 1921. The theory is based on the idea that people have a natural tendency to perceive the world through certain cognitive functions (also called “the four cognitive functions”) which are (according to Jung) innate to the mind and are not based on the culture or education of individuals.
Human beings can use these cognitive functions, called “introverted” (I) and “extroverted” (E), “thinking” (T) and “feeling” (F), or “perceiving” (P) and “judging” (J), to process information, think, feel, and act. Jung believed that this type of information processing leads to different patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving. He believed that these four functions were innate among all human beings, and that they could be identified based on the characteristics of the individual. The theory was further developed by Isabel Myers and her mother Katharine Briggs.
