My theory of this trait is that it is an extraverted function. The ISTP's extraverted function is more likely to be the sensing function, the "here and now" portion of the INTP's perception. It is more likely to be perceiving or sensing something in this present moment, rather than perceiving or sensing something that may or may not happen in the next moment. The ISTP's sensing function is more likely to be perceiving reality as it is in the here and now, rather than viewing our life as a series of possibilities.
But this doesn't mean that ISTPs can't also be future-oriented thinkers. What I am suggesting is that ISTPs are most likely to be perceiving the present moment as it is, with little desire for change or alteration based on their notions of what could happen in the future. This means that ISTPs are not compelled to make plans for the future, but instead are more likely to simply enjoy life as it is.
This ISTP trait is not compatible with ISTJ or ISFJ, the leaders and the helpers, respectively.
