Giordano Bruno was an atheist, and his writings made numerous attacks on religious establishments in Italy, France, Spain, England, and elsewhere. He often attacked the Catholic Church in his works, in particular in his book On the cause of earthquakes which he wrote in 1584.
He was originally tried for heresy by the Inquisition in Rome, but was later acquitted. He was banished from Rome by Pope Pius V, but was later allowed to return after being pardoned by Pope Gregory XIV.
