Poke personality type is ESFP, which is a fun-loving, enthusiastic extrovert. I’m the type that draws the characters and then builds them out. I’m not a real writer. I’m not someone who puts in all the hours of writing, but I do like to be creative, which is why I enjoy these things, because they’re like little adventures in my head.

AVC: You mentioned that you were initially asked to write Pokémon, but you declined. What made you want to do it instead?

JB: I wasn’t interested in Pokémon when I was younger, but when I saw the show, I fell in love with it. I was like, “This is awesome!” It’s got great characters, great stories—it’s just awesome. I just felt like I was in the right place for this. Usually, when people ask me to write something, they ask me to do something that takes place in outer space or in some fantastical world that doesn’t really exist. The only thing that exists in our world is Pokémon. This one’s real.
