At the age of 15, she won her first national title at the USTA Girls 18 National Championship. She won the U.S. Open Junior Singles title in 1985, beating future world No. 1 Justine Henin-Hardenne of Belgium in the final. She lost in the final of the NCAA Championship in 1986, but won the next two years, in 1987 and 1988.
