Felix was the only child of Princess Margarita of Greece and Denmark, who was a daughter of King George II of Greece. Felix's mother died in childbirth, leaving Felix an orphan at the tender age of 3. He spent his early childhood in Greece under the watchful eye of his Greek great-aunt, Queen Olga. Felix was then brought to the Danish court, where he became friends with Prince Valdemar of Denmark; the two were close companions throughout their teen years.
After graduating from the Royal Danish Military Academy, Felix became a military officer in 1879. He served in the Second Boer War (1881-1884), where he distinguished himself for bravery and leadership under the command of the Duke of York. For this, Prince Felix was awarded with the Medal of Honor, the Order of St. Olav, and the Victoria Cross.
During the First Balkan War (1912-1913), Prince Felix played a pivotal role in securing Romania's neutrality against Bulgaria's aggression.
