The couple first met as students at the University of Arizona in Tucson, where Jessica was studying to be a veterinarian and Ryan was studying to be a professor. Ryan would go on to receive a degree in wildlife ecology and conservation and biogeography and Jessica would later leave her degree in veterinary medicine. The two also met while working as field biologists for the USDA in the Sonoran Desert near Tucson, and eventually married there in 2011.
So why is Ryan Pierre a field biologist? In an interview with CNN, Ryan explained that he was not interested in becoming a veterinarian, but he became interested in the work that his wife was doing.
In college, Ryan worked for a company that was trying to develop a process to make cheese from the milk of desert tortoises. He liked the work enough to go to graduate school and studied how these reptiles could be used as a source of food, but he also took a course in his field of study even though he wasn’t really passionate about it.
From there, Ryan became involved in biodiversity research, particularly as it applies to plants and animals that live in desert environments.
