Gwendoline Christie was born in Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, to an English father and Dutch mother. She became interested in acting at the age of twelve, after seeing a television play called "A Boy I Knew". During her time at St Hugh's School, she played the part of Cordelia in "King Lear" and Lady Macbeth at the age of 17. She then went to Cambridge University, where she studied English Literature and Drama, graduating in 1986. Her graduation play was "The Changeling", a one-act adaptation of M. R. James' short story of the same name.
