I was raised to believe that I was special and that my life would be different than most others. I was told over and over again that I was smart and just as I’d expected: different.
It didn’t occur to me until I was well into adulthood that I was autistic. Maybe I was just a late bloomer or maybe it was because as a child I was so easily distracted and so easily bored, but I don’t think I ever believed that there was anything wrong with me.
It didn’t take long for me to learn that I am actually on the spectrum. At first I had a lot of trouble finding a diagnosis that fit me. Every doctor seemed to believe that a diagnosis of Asperger’s Syndrome or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) would fit me more closely.
I’m not sure why, but after a while I started to feel like there were more “normal” people out there than me.
