My favorite story to tell about myself is the one about the songwriter. I sing out of my heart, so I get very emotional about making music. I get so excited to get up on stage and perform that I get too emotional at times.
I’ve always loved music, but I was really shy about it in high school. I was also really shy about speaking up in class. I had a lot of self-doubt. I was afraid that if I spoke up, people would think I wasn’t smart enough to be in the class.
When I was 20 years old, I left Iran for university in Canada. I was studying English, but also playing music in the university jazz band. We played music by jazz greats like Miles Davis and Duke Ellington.
We were invited to perform at a jazz festival in Denmark, where we played Duke Ellington’s “Satin Doll” and Miles Davis’ “So What.” That’s where I met my wife, who was also in the band.
