Uribe was the third child of Jesús Álvarez Uribe and Elvira Álvarez. Jesús Álvarez was a farmer and served as the representative of Unión de Cafeteros de Colombia (UNPAC) in the House of Representatives, during his term (1938-1948). He also served as Senator (1947-1948). Elvira Álvarez was a teacher, who was also the sister of Jorge Eliécer Gaitán, the assassinated Chibcha political leader. Adrián Uribe's parents married in 1928, and had nine children. He was raised in the home of his maternal grandparents, Jesús Álvarez and Elvira Álvarez. His father died when he was 18 years old, and he later became a farmworker. Adrián Uribe learned to be a farmer and worked for his family's farm. He later became involved in politics, initially working for UNPAC, then Alianza Republicana Nacional Colombiana (ARNC), then Movimiento Conservador Nacional (MOC).
