Caterpie's other ability is Contrary. This means that, if Caterpie is attacked, it will instead use Heal Pulse to heal the attacker. This sounds like an okay ability. But then you remember that the only way to get this ability is to evolve Caterpie, and that evolution involves a lot of stress and tears (and a lot of other stuff, too).
When Caterpie evolves into Metapod, it takes one stage of evolution away. In other words, Caterpie takes one step closer to the "next level". This is a very stressful thing for a Caterpie to do, especially since it's a very small creature that has no way to defend itself for doing it.
When Caterpie evolves into Metapod, it also will lose its Contrary ability. This means that Metapod will be a much more passive creature. It just waits for the attacks to come to it.
