I think in all fairness to him, he didn’t know this when he was running, but when you are in the public eye for that long, things like that tend to come out. Clinton would say “I feel your pain”, and people would say “You’re just trying to get us to vote for you because you feel our pain”. People would say “You’re just saying that because you feel our pain”. He was very idealistic about his beliefs and people were starting to realize it.
