I was eating lunch at one of my favorite restaurants when I saw two people in line in front of me. The woman was in her late fifties, with gray hair in a tight bun. She had on a long, black, wool dress and black high heels. As I watched her in line, she fidgeted nervously with the collar of her dress. I also noticed that her left hand was shaking slightly.
The man next to her was in his late forties, wearing a short-sleeved blue shirt. He was well-built, with broad shoulders. He was also wearing jeans and tennis shoes. He stood perfectly still when the woman in front of him gave him a piece of paper and asked him to read it. He did so and then nodded his head and handed it back to her. They resumed their conversation without another word being spoken. I can't describe how odd it was to see this interaction between a man and a woman. Only the most confident of men would stand so still and quietly accept such a task from a woman, and only the most timid of women would ask her boyfriend to read her mail for her.
Tom Zé (born Antônio José Santana Martins, 11 October 1936 in Irará, Bahia, Brazil) is a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and composer who was influential in the Tropicália movement of 1960s Brazil. After the peak of the Tropicália period, Zé went into relative obscurity: it was only in the 1990s, when the musician and label head David Byrne discovered an album recorded by Zé many years earlier, that he returned to performing and releasing new material.
