It was a time when the Internet was in its infancy, and Ranton found a lot of information on the Web. He was fascinated by the possibilities of electronic communication, and he began writing computer code for a small business in Redmond.
"I was a geek," he says. "I was a computer nerd."
But he continued to read -- about World War II, about alien life, about philosophy, about politics.
"It's all just fascinating," Ranton says. "I've always had an interest in things that are either very big or very small."
It didn't take long for the Internet to find out about -- and attract -- Ranton. He started writing articles about his travels around the world and his encounters with people who shared his interest in spirituality.
He began selling his articles through his website, and he came to appreciate the value of having a web presence.
