The Hero's Journey
The Hero's Journey is a theory of mythopoetic storytelling developed by Joseph Campbell. It focuses on a hero's journey to a central, usually transcendent event.
The Journey may be a physical journey of the hero to some sacred site, location, or person (cf. "the quest"). The journey is often facilitated by supernatural helpers. The mythic hero often sacrifices his or her life to achieve some goal or end. Often, the hero must be rescued at the end of the journey.
The Journey is often divided into three stages: departure, initiation, and return. These do not correspond to the three stages of the Hero's Journey (Journey of the Hero, Initiation, Return).
