Israel got involved in politics by becoming a volunteer for the California State Democratic Party. He was eventually elected vice chairperson of the board, then went on to become vice chairperson, secretary, and finally chairperson of the board.

    Israel’s political career continued when he became a city councilmember in 1997.

    Matthew Israel is an American psychologist who is known for founding the Judge Rotenberg Center and inventing the Graduated Electronic Decelerator. As a freshman in college, Israel read B. F. Skinner's novel, Walden Two, in which the heroes build a utopia by conditioning the residents of a commune through the behaviorist principles of reward and punishment.
