Neisser's book, which is part of a series called "Making Sense of the Mind," is mostly about the processes that people use to think and process information. Neisser's thesis is that there are two different mental processes:
System 1 thinking: This is quick, intuitive and "intuitively" fast. It is also unconscious, or unconscious until it is consciously brought to consciousness. System 2 thinking: This is slower and more conscious, but it does not replace System 1. It is also (the author states) more accurate.
Neisser describes an experiment in which subjects were asked to make judgments about the likelihood of various events. The subjects' guesses were recorded as they made the judgments. Then the subjects were asked to rate their confidence in their guesses. A rating scale was used that went from 1 to 5, with 1 being "not at all sure" and 5 being "completely certain." The results of the experiment, Neisser said, showed that the most confident guesses were almost always wrong.
Ulric Gustav Neisser (December 8, 1928 – February 17, 2012) was a German-born American psychologist and member of the US National Academy of Sciences. He has been referred to as the "father of cognitive psychology".[1] Neisser researched and wrote about perception and memory. He posited that a person's mental processes could be measured and subsequently analyzed.[2] In 1967, Neisser published Cognitive Psychology, which he later said was considered an attack on behaviorist psychological paradigms.[3] Cognitive Psychology brought Neisser instant fame and recognition in the field of psychology.[3] While Cognitive Psychology was considered unconventional, it was Neisser's Cognition and Reality that contained some of his most controversial ideas.[3] A main theme in Cognition and Reality is Neisser's advocacy for experiments on perception occurring in natural ("ecologically valid") settings.[3] Neisser postulated that memory is, largely, reconstructed and not a snap shot of the moment.[2] N
