    Sakharov was born as Andrei Dmitriyevich Dementiev on December 12, 1911, in Moscow, Russia.

    He graduated from the Moscow Power Engineering Institute (MEI) in 1933. He also studied at The Moscow State University (MGU) and graduated with a degree in physics and mathematics in 1938.

    He became a teacher of physics and mathematics at the MEI in 1933 and was appointed deputy chairman of its board of trustees in 1940. In 1948 he became deputy chairman of the board of the Moscow Power Engineering Institute. He held this position until 1955, when he was elected chairman of the board.

    Sakharov was the director of the Moscow Power Engineering Institute between 1951 and 1955. He was also chairman of the board of trustees of this institute in 1955. He was appointed to the Presidium of the Council of Ministers in 1957. He became deputy-chairman of this council in 1959.

    Andrei Dmitrievich Sakharov (May 21, 1921-December 14, 1989) was a Russian nuclear physicist turned activist for human rights best known for helping to develop soviet hydrogen bombs then becoming an advocate for disarmament and peace, facing state prosecution as a result.
