    On a scientific level he is seen as a pioneer in a new scientific field of study, that of parapsychology, but more specifically as the first person to attempt to objectively measure psychical or paranormal events. In addition to his voluminous writings on the subject of psychic research, many of which were never published during his lifetime because he felt they would be rejected as folly by the scientific community, Henry was also known for his meticulous and careful research methods.

    Joseph Henry (December 17, 1797 – May 13, 1878) was an American scientist who served as the first Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. He was the secretary for the National Institute for the Promotion of Science, a precursor of the Smithsonian Institution. He was highly regarded during his lifetime. While building electromagnets, Henry discovered the electromagnetic phenomenon of self-inductance.
