(1882 - 1961) American experimental physicist noted for technically innovative experiments on materials at high temperatures and pressures. He rose steadily through the hierarchical levels of university status at Harvard, and for his work he was awarded the #Nobel Prize for Physics in 1946. When he found himself dying of cancer in 1961, he took his own life.

He proposed the “operational” approach to scientific meaning in his first philosophical book, The Logic of Modern Physics. He defined physical concepts (e.g., length) in terms of the operations, both physical and mental, involved in their measurement. 

Bridgman published more than 260 papers (of which only two listed a coauthor) and 13 books.
