Carrie's mother was very strict and, like Charlotte, did not allow the girls to attend school very often. The girls were home schooled and their education was focused on literature, history and literature. Charlotte also shared her daughters' love of literature since she wrote her daughters' imaginary stories and even composed poems for them to read. When Charlotte died from breast cancer at the age of 63, Carrie was only 21 years old. She was left with an inheritance which she used to support herself and her sister Emily.
