Biography
Early life
Chesterton was born in Campden Hill, Kensington, London, to Francis William Chesterton, a Roman Catholic engineer, and his wife, Frances Anne "Fanny" (née Wheler). He was the eldest of five brothers, including Leslie, Hilary, Ronald and Frank. He was baptised "John Henry Charles" in the Catholic faith.
Chesterton grew up in Enfield, then in Middlesex. His father supported the British Empire in the Victorian era, including the Second Boer War. One of his brothers became an Irish nationalist. The family's surname was Anglicised to "Chisholm" when they emigrated to Canada.
Chesterton's family moved to Beaconsfield, where Chesterton's father worked as a railway engineer. In 1899 Chesterton was sent to study at the Slade School of Fine Art. He failed to win a scholarship and failed to win a prize for drawing a self-portrait from life. In 1902 he won a scholarship to Balliol College, Oxford.
Gilbert Keith Chesterton (29 May 1874 – 14 June 1936) was an English writer, philosopher, lay theologian, and literary and art critic. He has been referred to as the "prince of paradox". Time magazine observed of his writing style: "Whenever possible Chesterton made his points with popular sayings, proverbs, allegories—first carefully turning them inside out."
