Stevin was born in 1568 in Breda, a small Dutch town on the banks of the river Vecht. His mother, who was a seamstress, had nine children. The family, which moved often due to Stevin’s father’s military career, was poor, and it was not until Stevin was eight years old that his father managed to get his first paid job.
Stevin’s most notable accomplishment was to invent the windmill. He was working as a clerk in the town hall of Breda when he decided to build a model of a windmill — one that would generate power through the turning of a crank. He presented his model to the local authorities, and they were so impressed that they hired him as an official clerk.
He soon became interested in astronomy and mathematics, and he started to correspond with scholars all over Europe. He also began to study mathematics and astronomy at the University of Leiden.
