As a child, Shinji was quite tomboyish, as he was often seen playing with the neighborhood girls; this is in contrast to Asuka, who was seen playing with the boys. However, as he grew older, Shinji became much more feminine in his behavior; Asuka once described him as "boyish" around this time, though she clearly did not like this.
