Tashi Wangchuk is the current incarnation of Lama Tashi Namgyal. The title Lama Tashi Namgyal derives from his rebirth as the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama.
Tashi Wangchuk was born in Lhasa, Tibet, on October 19, 1930. In 1953, he became a monk at age 13, taking the name Sonam Wangchuk. He was from a noble family and looked after by his older brother.
During the Dalai Lama’s escape to India in 1959, Tashi Wangchuk was one of his followers. He received the title “Lama Tashi Namgyal” after his rebirth as an 8th incarnation of the Dalai Lama. He became the spiritual leader of Tibet.
In 1959, he founded the Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC) in Lhasa. The TYC was the first and only national youth organization in exile. It was later banned by the Chinese government in 1966.
