In this video, you can see Hans explain the origin of the word “gay” and explain its different meanings. In the course of his explanation, he tells a story about Galileo, the astronomer who is responsible for many of our modern ideas about space. Hans says that Galileo was taken to the Vatican for questioning (he was suspected of heresy) and the inquisition asked him what he knew about the motion of the planets. He said that it was “against the Bible to interpret the motion of the planets by the motion of the sun.” The inquisition then asked him if he could prove the motion of the planets by the motion of the sun. Galileo then jumped to his feet and shouted “E pur si muove!” (“It moves, therefore it is!”), which means that everything in the universe moves, including us.
So Galileo became known as “the father of modern astronomy” for his discovery that “everything moves, including us.” Hans says that the word “gay” is an abbreviation for “galileo.”
Hans Rosling (1948 – 2017) was a Swedish physician, academic, and public speaker. He was a professor of international health at Karolinska Institute and was the co-founder and chairman of the Gapminder Foundation, which developed the Trendalyzer software system.
Hans Rosling held presentations around the world, including several TED Talks in which he promoted the use of data (and data visualization) to explore development issues. His posthumously published book Factfulness became an international bestseller.
