Patch Adams personality type is ENFP, although the author is a less developed version of this type. An ENFP's style of humor is often thought to be similar to that of a "zany" character portrayed by Robin Williams in "Good Will Hunting" (1997), which was a role that the author himself was strongly influenced by.
In the film, Williams plays a fictionalized version of himself, an overly optimistic, clownish therapist who informs his patients that life is a "game," and he should be played like a sport, not a therapist. In the film, Williams' character has an abrasive, sarcastic, and acerbic manner of speaking, while his patients are portrayed as childish and easily influenced. The character's pessimism and inability to accept reality allow him to counsel his patients into working through their problems.
