In his youth, Robert's family moved from the United States to the United Kingdom, where he was raised as a Jehovah's Witness. He attended a school where every government subject was taught from a religious perspective. When he was a teenager, he was a member of a small cell of Jehovah's Witnesses, which called itself the "Battle Axe Cell", and was involved with a number of paramilitary training exercises.
In his late teens, he began to question the authority of the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society, and he became involved in a number of other conservative religious groups. In his early 20s, he became part of the Christian Identity movement. In 1989, at age 24, he became a dogmatic literalist in the Dominionist movement, and joined the National Vanguard Christian Heritage Association (NVCHA). He became a member of the National Socialist Movement and the neo-Nazi Christian Identity movement. He also joined the National Vanguard and National Socialist White People's Party.
