Shawn Michaels was born on June 18, 1963 in St. Charles, Illinois. He grew up in the St. Louis suburb of St. Peters, Missouri, USA, attending St. Charles West High School (1975–79) and St. Louis University (1979–82).
After graduating from St. Louis University, Michaels began his professional wrestling career under the name "Headshrinker" Shawn Michaels, taking part in numerous promotions throughout the Midwest. At the age of 19, he joined the American Wrestling Association (AWA) as a heel (villain) wrestler, where he was managed by former AWA tag team champion "Cowboy" Bob Orton, Jr.. His first match in that promotion came on March 12, 1983 against "Rocky Johnson" (Ricky Steamboat). From May 1983 to March 1984 he wrestled for the Continental Wrestling Federation (CWF), where he formed a tag team with "Ricky The Dragon" Garvin (Rick Fuller), known as "The Fabulous Ones" (later known as The Rock 'n' Roll Express).
