Mohammed Khali was born on March 2, 1975, in Punia, India. His parents were laborers who lived in a village of indigo farmers. As a child, he was athletic and loved sports. When he was a teenager, he moved to Kolkata to live with his uncle to work as an apprentice at the local carpet factory.
He worked for five years at the factory, where he had to work overtime every day. He also received no training for his job.
