If we didn't, we'd be far less likely to stand up for what we know is right. "If I don't do it," you might say, "then nobody will." This is a problem for us; we need to know that we're doing the right thing, no matter what.
We're always asking questions. We're curious, and we like to see the world in shades of grey: we like to know what's right and what's wrong, and what's plausible and what's not. And we want to make sure we're doing the right thing. We feel our own pain and we feel our own happiness; we want to be able to make the right choice every time, but it's hard to know for sure. That's why it's so important to have strong principles.
