Conrad Gessner (also: Konrad Gessner, Latin: Conradus Gesnerus), born on 26 March 1516 in Zurich and died on 13 December 1565 in the same city, was a Swiss naturalist, known for his work as a humanist polygraph. Several of his encyclopaedic works are considered to be foundational in their field. His Historiae animalium (1551-1558) is the first modern zoological work to describe all known animals. His Bibliotheca universalis (1545) is the first bibliographic catalogue of printed works from the first century of printing in Europe.
