Troyard was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1969. As a child, he would often write his own stories based on his own observations. He also loved painting, drawing and playing guitar. His mother was a nurse who worked at the local hospital.
The family was extremely poor, living under a bridge in downtown Kingston. His father was an alcoholic and his mother would take part-time jobs to support the family.
Troyard's early life was difficult, but he managed to finish school and attend college. He received a degree in chemistry, but soon realized that he was not suited to work in a corporate environment. He has no formal musical training, but plays the guitar and sings well.
He became interested in acting after watching the 1986 film "Romancing the Stone". The movie inspired him to write his own books, which he began doing when he was 11 years old.
He began writing the series of novels that would make him famous right after graduating from college.
