Çelebi Mehmed was born in Istanbul, the second child of Çelebi Mehmed Efendi, who was a notable scribe in the Ottoman government, and his wife Çelebi Hümaşah Hanım. His father memorized the Quran at the age of 10, and later worked for the Ottoman memorization committee under his father, Çelebi Mehmed Efendi. Çelebi Mehmed, who was also a notable poet, was known for having composed many ghazals. Çelebi Mehmed was even better known for his "köy" or "village" poetry, which was inspired by his own experiences growing up in the Kuzguncuk neighborhood of Istanbul. Çelebi Mehmed also wrote poetry for the "siyer-i şerifi" (book of poetry), a collection of poems compiled by his father.
