Selim I (1544–1603), also known as Selim the Grim or Selim the Resolute, was the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1566 to 1603. He was one of the most powerful and influential Ottoman sultans, his reign marked a period of Ottoman history during which the Ottoman state became one of the leading military powers in Europe. He is also regarded as one of the most effective Sultans, having won many battles against the Habsburgs.
Selim was born in Amasya into the Kizlar Aghas clan, which originally came from Central Asia into Anatolia, near Konya. His father was Bayezid II, who was the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1558 to 1561. His mother was Safiye Sultan, Selim was born on 14 April 1554. His mother died 14 November 1558, the same year as his father. At the age of 20, Selim succeeded his father as sultan.
From 1566 to 1574, he fought alongside his father against his uncle Mustafa I.
