We see Captain Spaulding at the beginning of the film, before the others arrive. He’s standing on the deck of his ship, looking out upon the calm waters of the bay. We see him carefully inspect the lines of the ship, looking for any signs of imperfection. He’s also glancing at something inside of the ship through a porthole. He’s reading something off of a piece of paper, most likely a log or journal entry about his mission. We then see him rise up out of his chair and go into the cabin of the ship. He’s putting on his coat, preparing to leave the ship. He’s also taking his hat off of a table and turning to look at it over his shoulder. It’s clear that he’s moving purposefully towards where he’s going.
Next we see him at the dinner table with the others, all of whom are lighting their pipe.
